3 Tips Small Space

Prospect Leasing & Management has been in the Lancaster, PA apartment rental market for over twelve years and one issue we often see tenants grapple with is figuring out how to maximize their apartment space. Here are three great tips to keep in mind when you want to make the most of the available space in your apartment to keep your home feeling spacious, organized and functional!

Declutter

One of the best ways to maximize your apartment space is decluttering! Take a look at your belongings and consider getting rid of anything you haven’t used in over a year. This includes clothing as well as electronics, kitchen items and physical media. Tired of moving stacks of books and DVDs? Digitize your media and save it to the Cloud! Be ruthless when it comes to your unused possessions – the less clutter you have taking up space, the more room you will have to enjoy in your living space. Adopt the attitude of “for each thing I bring into my apartment, two things must go!”

Think Vertically

Taking advantage of vertical space is a great way to keep your apartment feeling open and uncluttered. The more possessions you have stored above floor level, the more livable space remains below. Consider shelving units that are high enough to reach your ceiling or floating shelves above doorways. Shelving, art and decorations hung high on your walls will draw eyes upwards, creating the illusion of higher ceilings than you may actually have. Take advantage of adhesive wall hooks to hang accessories and clothing items that may take up space in your closet.

Re-Think Your Furniture

This may sound counter-intuitive, but your space will seem less crowded and more functional if you have a few pieces of large furniture in your apartment as opposed to many small items (ex: one couch instead of two chairs). Exposed-leg furniture will appear to take up less room than bulkier options and you can hide more of your possessions by using coffee tables and stools with built-in storage compartments. Loft beds aren’t just for dorm rooms: consider installing one in your bedroom to maximize valuable floor space.

With a bit of creative thinking, you can take a cramped, cluttered space and remake it into a brand new home! Looking to rent in the Lancaster, PA area? Take a look at our current available properties here.
